Excavation — miscellaneous in Boherash

Within the historic town (CO027-042----) of Glanworth, to the SW of 'Rock Abbey' (CO027-040----). Nine pits were completely excavated in advance of a housing development in Boherash townland in 2004. A further two pits were partially excavated. All of these pits were located in trench 1 and were dated to the medieval period on the basis of medieval pottery, mainly late 13th/14th-century Cork-type. The pits ranged in diameter from 0.35 to 2.9m and in depth from 0.23 to 1.95m and were mainly either circular or oval in shape. Two of the pits may have been in contemporary use with an adjacent corn-drying kiln (CO027-203----). One pit was situated to the S of the flue and stoke area of the kiln and a sherd of Cork-type pottery was recovered from its fill. Six inter-cutting pits had been dug into the S end of the flue and stoke area of the kiln and post-dated the kiln use. A flint flake, iron slag and fragments of burnt and unburnt bone were recovered from one of these pits while one human bone fragment and Cork-type pottery were amongst the inclusions in another. The fragment of human bone was identified as the central section of the shaft of an adult tibia. The two partially excavated pits were located to the SE of the flue and stoke area of the kiln. A sherd of Cork-type pottery, sherds of Redcliffe pottery and two sherds of Saintonge green-glazed pottery were among the inclusions recovered from these partially excavated pits.
