What is recorded here

In pasture, on SW-facing slope, within early ecclesiastical enclosure (CO023-14601-). Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; circular area (38m E-W; 37m N-S) defined by low rise (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.45m). Faint trace of circular enclosure visible as shadow site in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R720). According to Bowman (1934, 42), 'mill grinding-stone, diam. 3 feet 6 inches' found 40 yards from site; possibly same stone now in grounds of Killavallig House. Possible ringfort (CO023-14604-) lies c. 15m to ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
