Bowman (2000, 81) records that a village was located in 'Mr. Cashman's land', about '400 yards [365m] West of Burial ground [CO022-052001-]...'. According to local information, the 'old town of Newmarket' was situated in Cashman's farm and was once linked to Clonfert graveyard by an old road which extended from the N side of the graveyard. Bowman (ibid.) also records that the name 'Na Fothraigh', meaning the ruins, which is 'applied to [a] field in P. Cashman's'. Ashes and hearths with firestones are visible at the W end of this field during ploughing. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
