On level flood plain, near E bank of Funshion River. Very little of castle survives (Cotter 1994, 102): rectangular raised area with stretch of wall (L 3m; H c. 3m) on E side, extending SW-NE; part of side of doorway, with drawbar socket, at SW end. Castle of Pigott family, forfeited by John fitzWilliam Pigott for his part in Desmond Rebellion (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 247). Included in grant to Arthur Hyde in 1588 (Healy 1988, 412). Said to have been burnt in 1641 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, 17).
