Kilgullane Church (in Ruins) — Kilgullane

Midway along N side of graveyard (14430). Fragmentary remains of rectangular church (c. 12.4m E-W; 6.5m N-S); original length uncertain as W end has disappeared. Most of E wall collapsed to foundation level; stump of masonry (L 2m; H c. 5m) stands near S end with wall press. East end of S wall survives (L 6m): blocked wall press near E end; ledge atop of wall probably for wall plate; narrow window with single flat-headed light, 1.7m from SE corner. North wall has similar light, directly opposite, light chamfered externally. Crudely moulded cornices on N and S walls; cornice on N wall partially obscured by later rebuilding. Seven gutter-stones project from external face of N wall. Towards W end of N wall, are remains of doorway (Wth 0.62m); door jambs chamfered externally, arch missing but described by Power (ibid.) as 'narrow, pointed doorway'. Remains of parish church of Kilgullane; late medieval in appearance. Reported as having nave 'in repair', chancel 'in ruins' in 1615, abandoned by 1694 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 68, 258). On or near site of Ceall Gallain, subsidiary church of the Tuath Glennomnach, which is listed in Crichad an Chaoilli (Power, ibid., 30). A vicarage of Kilgullane is mentioned c. 1272 (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 191). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
