Within the historic town of Buttevant (CO017-053001-). As part of the development of a new water mains system in Buttevant in 2001, pipeline trenches were archaeologically monitored. A pit was exposed in section underneath redeposited clay and the modern road surface in a trench immediately S of the gateway to the Convent of Mercy. The pit on the E-facing section of the trench measured 3.6m in length and 0.86m in depth while on the W-facing section the pit was 4.39m in length and 0.8m in depth. The pit had gently sloping sides and a flat base. The pit was filled with a large number of stones, oyster shells and some animal bone, however, no dateable material was recovered from the pit. According to the excavators (O'Donnell and Quinn 2002), the feature may have been a linear trench forming a ditch or a linear pit. (O'Donnell and Quinn 2002; O'Donnell 2003)
