Kilbroney Church (in Ruins) — Kilbroney

North-of-centre in graveyard (14585). Ruinous rectangular church (13.95m E-W; 6.2m N-S); side walls stand to near full height but most of E and W gables collapsed outwards in 1995-6. Entered through doorway W-of-centre in S wall; door surround has pointed arch, segmental arch over embrasure. Further E in S wall is window with splayed and lintelled embrasure, single ogee-headed light with recessed spandrels. North wall is featureless; outer face collapsing at centre and towards E end. West gable sheared off one or two courses above ground level, upper part prostrate and lying largely intact in graveyard. Remains of parish church of Kilbroney. Existing remains late medieval in appearance. Reported 'in ruins' in 1615, abandoned by 1694 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 248. A church here listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (ibid.). According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 233), church rebuilt by Richard Freeman in 1707, but no such alterations noted and Brady (ibid.) has no record the church being used after 1694.
