On SE-facing slope, overlooking tract of bogland; close to 18th-century Walshestown House (14939). Terrace in front of house, which is faced with low supporting walls (max. H 2m) with base batter on E and S sides, may be remains of castle. Cut stone strewn around site, including part of door arch, and dressed quoins built into 18th-century house, probably come from castle. Castle of the MacJames Barrys, which featured in wars of mid-17th century (MacCotter and Nicholls 1996, 207-8); subsequently purchased by Percival (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 4, 313).
