Water mill — horizontal-wheeled in Curraghgorm

At bend in steep-sided stream. According to local information, discovered c. 1974 when two fragments of a millstone were exposed following flooding and later an oak floor of five or six planks. These were subsequently washed away by another flood and the millstone fragments were removed to an adjacent field. The fragments fit together to form the circular runner stone (diam. 0.65m; T 0.08m); a central perforation (diam. c. 0.1m) is surrounded on the upper side by a concentric lip; four shallow rind-bar sockets on under surface. No trace of mill features except possible stone facing noted along sides of stream. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
