Situated c. 70m from Carrigaholt beach and some 600m W of Carrigaholt castle (CL065-100001-). A pier is indicated and named on a map included in ‘The second report of the commissioners for the improvement of the navigation of the river Shannon (Manby 1837)’ cited in Chapple (2001, 16-18). The pier appears on the map as a curving, almost horseshoe-shaped structure (c. 49.8m NE-SW; c. 33m E-W) but it may not be true either to shape or size. The positioning of the pier would have provided limited shelter to the NE, while any ships anchored there would have been completely exposed to the SE. The pier is referred to by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 228) who states that ‘Capt. Manby…recommended that a small pier should be extended from the spot called Lord Clare’s Pier, (which was formed in 1608 but has gone to decay)’. The pier may have been in too poor a state to be included in the 1840 OS map of the area.
