Monitoring of topsoil stripping (Licence Numbers 21D0048 and 21R0093) in August 2021 in connection with the Springfield Flood Relief Scheme resulted in the identification a number of spreads of burnt mound material. A burnt mound, subrectangular in plan (4.5m E-W; 3.7m N-S) extended beyond the NE limit of the works area. It comprised dark, charcoal-stained silty clay and heat-shattered stone. It was preserved in situ. A spread of burnt mound material c. 7m to the W was irregular in plan (diam. c. 2.5m) and was fully excavated in September 2021 by F. Walsh (Licence 20E0737). It is likely to represent material from the main burnt mound. Another burnt mound (CL063-032----) lies c. 55m to the SE.
