On top of a prominent plug of rock outcrop. It was probably built by Mortagh O'Brien and is first mentioned in a list of 1577 (Frost 1893, 638) and was granted to Donagh O'Brien, the fourth earl of Thomond in 1585 who leased it to James FitzNicholas Bourke of Limerick in 1618 (Ua Cróinín and Breen report, see attached document). Rectangular area (int. dims. 5m E-W; 4.6m N-S) defined by the outer facing of a wall (H 0.5m) at E, a scarp (H 0.6m) at S, and grass-covered stone spreads at W (Wth 5.8m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.1m) and N (Wth 2m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.85m). There are fragments of masonry in the centre.
