Hilltop enclosure in Knockadoon

On the crown of a conspicuous hillock, which is one of the highest points in this landscape, having commanding views in all directions. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). The monument is in pasture and is bisected by a field boundary (long axis NW-SE). It is depicted on all OS historic mapping and records an OS triangulation point of over 300ft OD. It is a roughly oval area (46m NW-SE; 53m NE-SW) defined by a furze-covered scarp (Wth 4m; H 1.3m) SW-WNW and a similar, yet clear scarp N-ESE which enclose the crown of the hillock. The scarp (Wth 3.5m; H 1.8m) is steeper ESE-SW and NW-N, where it is covered in dense overgrowth. An entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) is located at WSW. There are no obvious traces of a fosse. The interior to NE of the bisecting field boundary is quite rounded and falls steeply to the top of the scarp, as suggested by the hachures on the 1921 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is covered for the most part in light vegetation of briars and ferns. The interior to SW of the field boundary is generally clear and level on the crown area, where an OS triangulation pillar is located off-centre to SW. According to Westropp (1908-09, 388), the interior or ‘garth’ had been tilled and the fort had been divided between two farms. Ringforts (CL035-024----, CL035-026----, CL035-066----, CL035-067---- and CL035-058----, CL035-057---- and CL035-051----) are situated on conspicuous hillocks in the vicinity of this hilltop enclosure.
