Castle (in ruins) — Carrahil

Known locally as Cowlicks or Cabhlach, meaning a ruin (Coffey 89), George Fitzgerald of Cork lived in 'Carrokeel' when transplanted from Cork in the 1650s before the Fitzgeralds built Lahardan House which is c. 2km to the NW c. 1735. Situated on a low-lying peninsula at the NW angle of Inchicronan Lough attached to the W shore. There is no clear evidence of the castle although there are numerous cairns in an overgrown bawn (CL026-018002-) (dims. 72m NNE-SSW; 25m WNW-ESE) defined by a wall of uncoursed limestone with an external batter (Wth 1.4m; max. ext. H 3.6m at NW). There is a destroyed gateway (Wth 3m) at the N end of the W side with the base of inturned walls on each side (L 6m). There is a draw-bar socket (L 1.2m) on the NE side of the gateway. The bawn contains more recent buildings, including the foundations of a rectangular structure (int. dims. 11m NW-SE; 5.5m NE-SW) against the NW wall of the bawn, and a lime-kiln at the centre.
