Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballybaun

On low-lying ground adjacent to a ravine which opens out to the E and with slightly lower ground to the W where there was a turlough. There is reclaimed land to the W and high ground to the N, NE and W. Within an extensive field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A circular area (ext. dims. 25.15m N-S; 23.5m E-W) defined by a spread of stones (Wth 4.3-6.3m; int. H 0.5-1m; ext. H. 1-1.5m) and overgrown with dense scrub on the perimeter and in the interior particularly at S and W. The outer face of the original wall can be traced virtually all the way around but is particularly well built at the NE-SE, SSE-SSW and W-NW where it consists of horizontally laid stones (dims. 0.3-0.8m). A prominent gap in the SSE is likely for animal access. There is a pit to the S of the centre (L 2.4m E-W; Wth 1.3m N-S; D 0.5m) and three later enclosures in the E (int. dims. 5.4m N-S; 3.2m E-W), S (int. dims. c. 5m E-W; c. 2.5m N-S), and W (int. dims. 4.5m N-S; 2.8m E-W).
