Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballybaun

In a low-lying position in undulating landscape with reclaimed pasture to the S and pavement and scrub to the N and E, with a slight drop to the W. Within an extensive field system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Classified as a ‘Enclosure’ on the RMP (1996). A circular area (est. dims. 31.3m E-W; 30.5m N-S) defined by a stone spread (Wth 5.5; H 0.6-1m), overgrown from S to NW. The original inner wall-face is visible from NE to E and comprises similar stones with a flush inner face (Wall Wth at W 2.2m). The outer wall-face is visible from W to SE comprising one or two courses of horizontally laid stones (L c. 0.8m; Wth 0.3m; H 0.4m). There is an upright stone at the SE and an entrance gap at the S (Wth 1.4m). There are two house sites in the interior, one W of centre (CL016-020039-) and one in the NW quadrant (CL016-020040-). Inside the N perimeter, an irregular enclosed area (L 3m N-S; Wth 2.4m E-W) is defined by a stone spread (Wth 2.5-3m). Drystone walls have been built outside the outer wall-face from S to W.
