House — indeterminate date in Cahermackirilla

At the W edge of a plateau, on a gentle S-facing slope in rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-084001-). This rectangular house (7.3m ESE-WNW; 6.3m NNE-SSW) is defined by a collapsed double-faced stone wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m). The base of a window embrasure (Wth 0.6m) survives at the E end of the S wall. Just to the W of this, on the inner wall-face, there is a wall cupboard (H 0.4m; Wth 0.45m; D. 0.45m) the top of which is level with the windowsill. There is another cupboard (H >0.3m; Wth 0.5m; D. 0.7m) at the S end of the W wall, which is blocked at the bottom. The depth of this alcove suggests that either the W wall—the outer face of which is not extant—was very wide or this ‘cupboard’ is in fact a doorway. A later drystone shelter built in the interior comprises an E-W passage (L 5m; Wth 1.55m), which curves to the N at its W end and terminates in a circular corbelled chamber (diam. 1.7-1.8m; max. H 1.4m). Westropp (1898, 361) described this as a ‘small closed souterrain.’ There is a hut site (CL009-084026-) c. 15m to the ENE and a cashel (CL009-084016-) and enclosure (CL009-084014-) lie c. 49m to the NE and c. 48m to the SW respectively.
