Indicated — Ballyganner South

Situated within the N sector of the interior of a cashel (CL009-59064-), against the wall-face. Indicated on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. This rectangular house (int. dims. 11.25m E-W, 6.5m N-S) is defined by denuded and grass-covered walls (H 0.4m; Wth 0.9-1.1m), which are probably clay-bonded; some visible lime-like accretions were probably washed out of the stone. The outer face of the N wall is not visible. FitzPatrick (2009, 299-300) noted that the quoinstones are rounded and that the house is of a similar size to the tighe móir or big house (CL009-001052-) in Cahermacnaghten (CL009-001010-), which dates to the late-medieval period or perhaps the first half of the 17th century. The remains of a tower house (CL009-059065-) stand in the S sector of the cashel. Its relationship with the house remains to be determined. If both are contemporary, the house may have functioned as a hall associated with the tower house; however, the house may pre- or post-date the tower (ibid., 302). Three other houses (CL009-059108-, CL009-059109- and CL009-059110-), also possibly associated, lie outside the cashel c. 18m to the E.
