What is recorded here

This children’s burial ground is situated within the SW sector of the interior of a cashel (CL009-059101-), which is labelled ‘Site of ‘Kilcameen Church’ on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. On the 1920 ed., the symbol for ‘Site of’ is shown within a small rectangular unenclosed ‘Grave Yard’, indicated by a broken line. The only burials evident are those that relate to the children’s burial ground (c. 11m N–S; c. 10m E–W). The burials are marked by stones (L c. 0.4m; H 0.2–0.4m; Wth 0.15m) set apart in lines, which generally run N–S and are up to 2m apart, but some are contiguous. Immediately to its S there is a cairn, possibly related, which overlies the cashel wall. Children were buried here from at least the late 19th century (Westropp 1897, 125) to relatively recent times Swinfen (1992, 33). There is a cist (CL009-059009-) in the SE sector of the cashel.
