Dermot and Granias Bed — Termon

On a low craggy W-facing slope on the E side of a N–S valley with views of wedge tomb CL006-056----c. 300m to WNW. Indicated on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps and named ‘Dermot & Grania’s Bed’ on the 1915 ed. Westropp (Comber 1999, 60) initially recorded it as in Rannagh East, but later corrected his mistake (Comber 1999 , 110-11). It is recorded in the Megalithic Survey as CL.22 (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1961, 17–18). A well-preserved wedge tomb set in a grass-covered mound (9m N–S; 7m E–W; H 1m). Stones protruding from the mound suggest it may be composed of small overlapping slabs, like those recorded elsewhere (Ó Maoldúin 2015). The tomb is orientated just W of S and both sidestones and capstone remain in situ. The chamber widens and rises toward the south (L 2.9m; Wth at N 0.8m; Wth at S 0.9m; H c. 1m). The sidestones are of similar dimension (L 2.9m; T 0.25m; H at S 0.95m) and their upper edges are dressed. The W sidestone has a narrow crack 0.6m from its S end. The E sidestone leans slightly inward and has a thin incised line along its inside, 0.13m from its top edge, that de Valera and Ó’Nualláin believed to be a modern attempt to remove a part of it (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1961, 17). The capstone (L 2.45m; Wth at S 1.6m; Wth at N 1.3m) rests on the W sidestone at two points and on the E sidestone at only one. A stone (L 0.5m; H 0.15m; T 0.15) outside the S end of the E sidestone may have been a packer and a recumbent stone (0.7m x 0.7m; T 0.2m) at the south end may have blocked the end of the chamber.
