Fulacht fia in Keelhilla

At the interface between an expanse of grassland and a hazel wood, c. 200m E of the foot of the E-facing cliffs of Slieve Carran. There is damp ground immediately to W, and a spring, with a holy well (CL006-023005-), is located c. 40-45m to W within the hazel wood. This fulacht fia is evident as a roughly circular, compact, grass-covered mound (diam. 9-10m; H 0.5-0.8m). In parts where the sod has been eroded, dense concentrations of small limestone fragments, in a matrix of dark grey soil, are visible. The mound is highest and most clearly defined at E–SE. It is lower and more broadly slumped on the W side, possibly indicating the location of the trough. A hawthorn tree grows out of the NE edge of the mound, and a second hawthorn stands close to the mound at S, beside a large boulder which rest on the edge of the mound. The boulder appears to be part of a ruined field wall, on a roughly E–W axis, which skirts the SE–S edge of the mound.
