What is recorded here

A souterrain ‘said to be 30yds SSW of church’ is noted on the SMR file (‘OPW files, Sheet 4’). On field inspection in 1998 the souterrain was not visible. Warren (1892, 445-6) references a letter of 1780 published in the ‘Saunders News-letter’ from ‘Burren, in the county of Clare’, describing an underground stone-cut burial chamber or crypt with an undated memorial stone ‘near the Abbey of St Daragh’. It is unclear if this is the location in question of if it is to this that the OPW note refers. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Lynda McCormack Date of upload: 10 October 2022
