On a terrace on the W-facing slope on the NW side of Slieve Elva, with commanding views WSW–NE. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). Hachured and named ‘Ballyelly Caher’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Westropp (1901, 10) recorded it along with the other cashels in the vicinity.
A circular cashel (ext. diam. 30m) defined by a stone bank/wall (Wth 3–4.5m; ext. H 0.35–2.25m; int. H 0.7–0.85m) with well-preserved outer face but a largely robbed and scattered internal face. Internally there are the remains of two rectangular structures of indeterminate date (CL004-016038- and CL004-016039-).
This cashel lies within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL004-016001-), covering an area of c. 8sqkm. An enclosure (CL004-016008-) and two cashels (CL004-016012- and CL004-016014-) also within that field system, are located c. 15m W, 85m N and 50m SE respectively.
