Fulacht fia in Knockycallanan

In pasture, located adjacent to a spring on a rocky terrace on the lower N-facing slope of Turlough Hill. The S side of the terrace is defined by a rocky cliff face from the base of which the spring rises. At the N edge of the terrace, the ground falls away in a broad slope of limestone pavement/outcropping to the base the hill. A small concrete well house, which taps into the spring, is located c. 10m to N of the fulacht fia. Sod-covered, roughly crescent-shaped mound (c. 10-11m N–S; c. 5m E–W; H c. 0.5m) composed of a dense concentration of small, limestone fragments in a matrix of dark brown-black soil. On the E side is a shallow depression, indicating the likely location of the trough. This faces an area of wet ground fed by the spring, which rises 3m to SE at the base of a rock face. A slight indentation is also evident on the SW side of the mound, also bordered by wet ground. Expanses of natural limestone pavement lie adjacent to the mound at N and E.
