Dublin Castle (Office of Public Works)

Attached two-storey gate lodges flanking central through-way, built c. 1825 and extended c. 1970, with enclosed yard to south. Now in use as offices. Hipped slate roofs, with lead-lined eaves gutters to north, half-round cast-iron gutters on drive-in brackets, blue/black clay angle ridge tiles, unpainted smooth rendered chimneystack to ridge if west lodge with four octagonal-plan yellow clay pots, three-legged yellow brick chimneystack on ashlar granite base to east lodge with yellow clay pots (two octagonal, one round). Squared-and-snecked staged ashlar limestone walling to north elevation, with plain pilasters delineating bays, with moulded coping, painted smooth render to east, west and south elevations of both lodges, and with yellow brick walling to rear face of archway. Two lead-capped miniature dormers projecting from eaves to south elevation of west lodge. Square-headed window openings, with painted smooth-rendered reveals, granite sills, timber sliding sash windows, variously two-over-two pane and four-over-two pane to southeast and west elevations, and two-over-two pane fixed casements to front elevation of east lodge with chamfered reveals to head, jambs and sill. Limestone mullioned central first floor window to front elevation of west lodge. Square-headed door openings, with chamfered ashlar limestone surrounds, timber vertically sheeted doors to north elevation, incorporating overlights. Segmental arch to archway, with chamfered reveals and head, pointed ashlar limestone voussoirs, and replica mild steel double-leaf gate mounted on freestanding posts behind opening. Located opposite south side of Chapel Royal and Record Tower, with roadway to north and with driveway to south leading to gate screen leading to Coach House.
