Elmhurst Nursing Home — Hampstead Avenue

Detached five-bay three-storey former house, dated 1869. Now in use as private nursing home and having irregular plan with projecting central gabled bay to north and full-height canted projections to west and south, abutted to east by extensive contemporary extension; single-storey porch to northeast re-entrant angle. M-profile pitched slate roof, hipped over canted-bays, with terracotta ridge and hip tiles, tall polychrome red and blue brick chimneystacks with gauged brick and stone copings and yellow clay pots. Projecting bracketed eaves carrying cast-iron ogee rainwater goods and some replacement uPVC rainwater goods; and with narrow sawtoothed bargeboards. Roughcast-rendered walling generally, over rock-faced granite plinth and ashlar granite stringcourse; south elevation has rock-faced granite ground floor; deep polychrome brick eaves course; stucco walling to porch having fretwork parapet, cornice and frieze and datestone. Generally square-headed window openings to ground and second floors, with segmental-headed window openings to first floor; stop-end chamfered painted rendered reveals, projecting granite sills and replacement uPVC casement windows. Ground and first floors windows have pointed brick lintels, those to ground floor south elevation having granite lintels and chamfered red brick reveals. Tripartite round-headed window opening to porch with moulded imposts, continuous arcaded brick heads, continuous sill and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Three-bay timber oriel window to east having lean-to roof, moulded timber brackets on decorative granite corbels; painted timber transomed and mullioned casement windows having chamfered reveals. Round-headed doorway to porch, flanked by stucco piers with strap and shield motifs, inset pilasters carrying archivolt with keystone, pointed star motifs to spandrels, and having encaustic tile flooring. Square-headed doorway to inner side of porch, with moulded stucco surround and four-panel bolection-moulded timber door with brass furniture and muntin. Set within Hampstead Hill Estate with landscaped lawn to south and carpark to north, accessed by tree-lined lane to west.
