Killala House

Stable complex, built 1893-4, on a U-shaped plan about a courtyard including (west): Attached three-bay single-storey stable block with half-attic on a T-shaped plan centred on single-bay full-height gabled flush breakfront; two-bay full-height recessed end bays. Restored, 1998. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on a T-shaped plan centred on pitched (gabled) slate roof (breakfront), clay ridge tiles centred on lantern, red brick Running bond buttressed chimney stacks having stringcourses below corbelled stepped capping supporting yellow terracotta pots, rooflights to rear (west) pitch, and cast-iron rainwater goods retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part repointed coursed or snecked rubble limestone walls on limestone ashlar chamfered plinth with red brick flush quoins to corners; limestone ashlar surface finish (breakfront) with cut-limestone coping on "Cavetto" kneelers supporting gabled bellcote. Square-headed central opening with cut-limestone lintel centred on keystone framing timber boarded double half-doors having overlight. Round-headed window opening (half-attic) with cut-limestone sill, and cut-limestone "bas-relief" block-and-start surround centred on keystone framing timber casement windows having fanlight. Square-headed window openings (ground floor) with cut-limestone sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds framing three-over-three timber sash windows having overlights. Square-headed window openings (half-attic) with cut-limestone sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): stables retaining timber boarded stalls with ball finial-topped cast-iron colonette newel pots. Set in unkempt landscaped grounds shared with Killala House with drag edged rock faced limestone ashlar piers to perimeter having cut-limestone shallow pyramidal capping supporting wrought iron double gates.
