Ballynatray House — BALLYNATRAY DEMESNE

Farmyard complex, c.1800, on a quadrangular plan about a courtyard comprising: (i) (north-west range): Attached twelve-bay two-storey outbuilding. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with rolled lead ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods on squared rubble stone eaves. Unpainted roughcast lime rendered walls over random rubble stone construction. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, red brick dressings, and remains of timber fittings. Square-headed door openings with timber lintels, red brick dressings, and remains of timber fittings. (ii) (north-east range): Attached fifteen-bay single- and two-storey stable building comprising single-bay two-storey entrance tower to centre having segmental-headed carriageway, and eight-bay single-storey flanking wings to left (north-west) and to right (south-east). Now disused. Pitched slate roofs (pyramidal to tower) with clay ridge tiles (rolled lead ridge tiles to tower), and no rainwater goods on squared rubble stone eaves. Unpainted roughcast lime rendered walls over random rubble stone construction with cut-stone dressings to tower including stringcourse to first floor. Series of round-headed door openings to wings with red brick dressings (originally concealed), and remains of timber fittings. Segmental-headed carriageway to tower with no fittings. Segmental-headed window opening to first floor to tower with stone sills, red brick dressings, and remains of timber fittings. Square apertures to eaves level (possibly forming dovecote). (iii) (south-west range): Detached ten-bay single-storey outbuilding with nine-bay single-storey open front ‘arcade’. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods. Random rubble stone walls with lime mortar, and traces of unpainted lime render over. Square-headed window opening with stone sill, yellow brick dressings, and remains of timber fittings. Series of square-headed openings forming open front ‘arcade’ with iron pillars. (iv) Detached single-bay single-storey lodge to south-east. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack having profiled coping, and no rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Random rubble stone walls with section of red brick Running bond, and traces of unpainted lime render over. Square-headed door opening with lintel, and timber boarded door. (v) Gateway to courtyard comprising segmental-headed opening having limestone ashlar flanking piers with spring course, limestone ashlar voussoirs, cut-stone stringcourse to parapet, and bellcote over in swept gable having pointed-arch aperture with brick dressings, and cut-stone coping.
