Mount Melleray Monastery — MOUNTMELLERAY

Terraced seven-bay two-storey over basement rubble stone boarding house, c.1850, retaining original aspect with seven-bay two-storey double-pile lower return to north-east, and three-bay two-storey recessed lower end bay to left (north-west) having three-bay single-storey return to north-east continuing into five-bay single-storey higher block to north-east. Now in use as clubhouse. Hipped slate roofs (double-pile (M-profile) to one return) with clay and rolled lead ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Broken coursed squared rubble red sandstone walls to main block with unpainted rendered, ruled and lined walls to remainder. Square-headed window openings in bipartite arrangement with cut-limestone sills, cut-limestone surrounds, 4/4 timber sash windows to main block and to return, and 1/1 timber sash windows to recessed wing and to return. Segmental-headed door opening with two cut-stone steps, cut-limestone panelled pilaster surround having archivolt over, timber chamfered colonette doorcase, glazed timber panelled double doors, sidelights on timber panels, and fanlight. Set back from line of road with sections of decorative cast-iron railings to open basement on cut-limestone plinth having finials, and hedge boundary to forecourt.
