RIC barracks — Strand Side South

Semi-detached three-bay two-storey house, c.1840, originally part of larger detached six-bay two-storey police station with building to south-east with two-bay two-storey lower recessed wing to north-west, and single-bay two-storey lower return to north-east. Renovated, c.1965, with single-bay single-storey projecting glazed porch added to centre. Extensively renovated, c.1990. Hipped (shared) roof (pitched to wing and to return) with replacement artificial slate, c.1990, clay ridge tiles, cut-stone chimney stack on axis with ridge, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.1990, on overhanging eaves having consoles. Hipped artificial slate roof to porch with clay ridge tiles, and plastic rainwater goods on timber eaves. Painted rendered, ruled and lined walls with rendered quoined piers to ends. Square-headed window openings with rendered sills, moulded rendered surrounds, and replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1990. Square-headed openings to porch with concrete sill, aluminium casement windows, and glazed aluminium door having overlight. Round-headed door opening to house with moulded rendered surround, timber panelled door, and spoked fanlight. Set back from line of road with sections of cast-iron railings to forecourt on random rubble stone plinth having finials, and cast-iron gate.(ii) Detached three-bay single-storey rubble stone coach house with half-attic, c.1840, to north with segmental-headed carriageway to right ground floor, and single-bay single-storey linking bay to south. Extensively renovated, c.1965, with attic remodelled to accommodate residential use. Part refenestrated, c.1990. Hipped slate roof with red clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted rendered walls with rendered coping to parapet to linking bay. Square-headed window openings (probably remodelled, c.1965) with replacement concrete sills, c.1965, replacement timber casement windows, c.1965, and some replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1990. Segmental-headed carriageway remodelled, c.1965, to accommodate square-headed window opening with concrete sill, timber casement window, and painted tooled cut-stone surround to carriageway. Square-headed door opening to linking bay with cut-granite block-and-start surround. Now blocked-up with painted cement render over.
