Ballynahow Stud Farm — BALLYNAHOW (SPIERS)

Detached five-bay two-storey house, built 1856, and remodelled early twentieth century, facing south, with gable-fronted projecting entrance bay to east end built to front of earlier arched vehicular entrance, and having recent projecting timber verandah to front of other bays. Two-bay two-storey return, with four-bay single-storey lean-to to west end of rear and full-height two-bay lean-to to east end of rear. Pitched slate roof with rendered and brick chimneystacks. Decoratively carved timber bargeboards and finial to entrance bay. Rendered walls with pebble-dashed panels, and with limestone date plaque to entrance bay. Remains of ashlar limestone carriage arch to entrance bay, with moulded limestone impost. Four western bays have square-headed window openings, first floor having brick block-and-start surrounds and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, and ground floor having glazed timber French doors with paned overlights. Entrance bay has square-headed window openings with five-light timber casement windows having oaned overlights, and having similar two-light window to east side wall. Similar two, three and five-light timber casement windows to rear. Square-headed door opening to west side wall of entrance bay having six-pane overlight to timber panelled door. Rectangular farmyard complex to rear having cobbled surface and ranges to all sides, and further outbuilding to south of house. Eight-bay single-storey west range having two-bay south end elevation, hipped slate roof with timber louvered vents and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods, coursed rubble limestone walls, square-headed openings with brick block-and-start surrounds, windows having limestone sills and some with remains of fixed timber windows, and doorways having timber battened doors, elliptical-arched vehicular entrance with brick voussoirs and timber battened double-leaf doors. Ten-bay single-storey east range having hipped slate roof, half-hipped to south gable end, with coursed rubble limestone walls, and square-headed openings with brick block-and-start surrounds, windows having limestone sills and doorways having timber battened half-doors, and elliptical-arched vehicular entrances with brick voussoirs and block-and-start surrounds. Two-bay single-storey south range with half-hipped slate roof and rendered chimneystack, rubble limestone walls, square-headed door opening and elliptical-arched vehicular entrance with brick block-and-start surrounds. North range comprising L-plan four-bay two-storey section to east with gable-fronted end-bay and four-bay single-storey section to west, having pitched corrugated-iron roof to west section and pitched slate roofs to east section with timber bargeboards and render ball finial to gable-front, rubble limestone masonry walls and square-headed window openings with brick block-and-start surrounds, some with limestone sills and similar openings to gable-fronted bay, first floor, west elevation having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows and limestone sills, square-headed door openings with brick block-and-start surrounds and timber battened doors, and elliptical-headed arches to gable-fronted bay, north and south gables, and east section, having brick block-and-start surrounds and timber battened double-leaf doors. Four-bay single-storey outbuilding to south, with half-hipped slate roof, rubble limestone walls, and square-headed window openings with brick block-and-start surrounds and timber casement windows, square-headed openings with timber battened doors. Square-profile rubble limestone piers with render caps having ball finials and single-leaf timber gate. Pair of monolithic, carved limestone octagonal piers with ornate caps, to south. Dressed limestone square-profile piers with rendered walls having render copings and plinth courses.
