Spring Cottage — Mallow

Detached three-bay single-storey over basement house, built c. 1860, having three-bay two-storey rear and side elevations, two additions to rear, both two-storey, one with pitched and hipped roof with rendered chimneystack, and one two-bay flat-roofed, with lean-to single-storey attached to former. Hipped slate roof to main block with overhanging sheeted eaves, rendered chimneystacks, moulded render cornice, dentillated to front elevation, and terracotta ridge tiles. Painted rendered walls with rounded corners to front elevation having render pilasters with floral motifs to capitals. Dog-tooth course between floors of front elevation of three-pane addition. Square-headed window openings to main block and to three-bay addition, other addition having round-headed windows to first floor of rear elevation. Front elevation and east bay of south elevation have timber casement windows with decorative oblong panes and first floor windows of three-bay addition are timber fixed and casement windows with decorative glazing. Other windows are timber sliding sash, those to first floor of main block being six-over-six pane, and those to additions being varied, with three-over-six pane, six-over-three pane, bipartite two-over-two pane and eight-over-eight pane, all with painted stone sills. Round-headed openings have one-over-one pane windows. Square-headed openings to first floor of front elevation of block to north with decorative paned timber casement windows and painted stone sills and decorative render sill course. Square-headed openings to rear of block to north with six-over-three, three-over-six and eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows and painted stone sills. Elliptical-headed door opening to front elevation with moulded render surround, timber panelled door with doorcase comprising timber panelled pilasters with fluted console brackets and caps, sidelights, timber cornice and fanlight. Approached by flight of dressed limestone steps with cast-iron railings. Camber-headed door openings to three-bay addition, one with timber battened door, approached by flight of concrete steps and both with paned overlights. Camber-headed carriage entrance between these doors with timber battened double-leaf door. Access to garden at rear via entrance to south with square-profile rubble stone piers with cast-iron double-leaf gates and decorative cast-iron arch above. Rubble limestone boundary walls to roadside with render copings and square-profile rendered piers with rectangular panels, render caps and decorative cast-iron double-leaf gates.
