Saint Michael's Catholic Church — DARVER

Freestanding Roman Catholic church, built c. 1905. Gable-fronted, two-stage bell tower to north-east, single-storey L-shaped vestry to south-east, gable-fronted breakfront to north; six-bays to nave (west), chancel to south, buttresses divide window openings. Pitched slate roof, crested ridge tiles, rendered chimneystack to vestry, stone verge coping to gables, stone cross finials to apexes, profiled cast-iron gutters at corbelled eaves course, square-profile downpipes; crenellated parapet and four-sided pyramidal spire, cast-iron finial. Squared rock-faced coursed granite walling to north elevation and tower, tooled stone plinth and string courses; squared roughly coursed stone walling to south, west and east elevations, chancel and vestry, ashlar granite string courses to sill and lintel levels. Pointed arch window opening to north elevation, hood moulding, tooled stone surround, stone traceried stained-glass rose window above pointed arch arcade; pointed arch lancet windows flanking entrance door, stone tracery teardrop overlights; paired pointed arch lancet windows to nave, dressed stone block-and-start surrounds, flush sills, stained-glass leaded lights; square-headed and four-centred arched openings to vestry, dressed stone block-and-start surround, flush sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows. Pointed arch door opening surmounted by gabled projection, hood moulding over dressed stone surround, timber vertically-sheeted double doors, decorative cast-iron hinges, flanked by gable-headed buttresses. Interior accessed through entrance porch with glazed and timber doors; timber pews on carpet. Painted timber diagonally-sheeted roof panels, painted plaster walls, paired lancet windows under pointed arches, mosaic walling to chancel, white marble altar to south, timber choir balcony to north. Located in close proximity to parochial house and national school. Bounded by brick wall.
