Rockshire House — Rockshire Road

Detached seven-bay two-storey over part basement house, extant 1837, on a symmetrical plan including two-bay (three-bay deep) two-storey bow-ended wings. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Adapted to alternative use, 2001. Bow-ended hipped slate roof with ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta tapered pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered stepped eaves with cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered piers to corners. Segmental-headed central door opening in square-headed recess approached by flight of four cut-granite steps between arrow head-detailed mild steel railings, rendered doorcase with fluted pilasters on stepped plinths supporting ogee-detailed cornice on dosserets framing timber panelled double doors having fanlight. Square-headed window openings (basement) with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing three-over-three timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing nine-over-six (ground floor) or six-over-six (first floor) timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, and decorative plasterwork cornice to ceiling; staircase hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, cantilevered staircase on an elliptical plan with balusters supporting carved timber banister terminating in volute, and carved timber surrounds to door openings to landing framing timber panelled doors; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled shutters on panelled risers. Set in relandscaped grounds.
