This blue commemorative plaque records: Literary & Philosophical Society. Society established 1793. This building, designed by John Green, opened in 1825. Robert Stephenson was President of the Society, 1855 - 59.
Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) was a prominent civil engineer and the son of George Stephenson, known for his work on railways including the London & Birmingham Railway. He served as President of the Literary & Philosophical Society from 1855 to 1859, contributing to its prestige during his tenure.
