What is recorded here

Heighley Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification in Staffordshire, built after the conquest of 1066. Its earthen mound and bailey reveal a rapid defensive response, not a grand stone palace. The castle likely controlled a local area before stone buildings replaced temporary wooden defences.
The National Heritage List for England records Heighley Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Heighley Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Heighley family, a local landholding family in the medieval period. It is remembered as an example of a small motte-and-bailey castle that reflects the feudal military architecture of the era.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
