Hurst Castle is a coastal artillery fort built by Henry VIII between 1541 and 1544 to defend the western entrance to the Solent. It has fired heavy guns at French and Napoleonic threats, held Parliament troops during the English Civil War, and watched smugglers slide past its stones. The sea now cuts into the eastern wing, and the castle stands on a shrinking spit of sand.
