Rubha Mòr is a basaltic sea cliff or headland formed during the Tertiary period, approximately 60 to 55 million years ago, as a result of volcanic activity associated with the North Atlantic Igneous Province. It is notable for its dramatic coastal exposure of columnar basalt, indicative of ancient lava flows that cooled and contracted to form distinctive hexagonal columns.
