What is recorded here
Driveway Bridge in Stornoway has carried carts and boots across the Lews Castle grounds since the 18th century. Its stones still hold the pressure of wheels and the patience of men who built it to span no more than a few metres of water or earth. The castle loomed behind it, a place of residence and display, while the bridge remained the ordinary entrance to that world.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lewis, Stornoway, Lews Castle, Driveway Bridge as Bridge (18th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Lews Castle, including its 18th-century Driveway Bridge, was built by the Macleod of Lewis family, who held the island under the Lord of the Isles tradition and later as clan chiefs. The castle and its structures are important as symbols of historical power and continuity in the Western Isles of Scotland.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
