Mound in Mullycagh Upper

Mound

Why this matters

Neolithic circular mound, likely a passage tomb or ritual monument, dating to the 4th–3rd millennium BCE. Its kerbed construction and location suggest ceremonial significance, though the site's integrity has been compromised by field boundaries.

What is recorded here

Situated on a gentle E-facing slope overlooking the steep edge of Hollywood Glen towards the E. Circular mound (diam. 15m; H 1.8m) defined by a kerb of small boulders along the S edge. The site is bisected by a field boundary; to the S of this it is considerably denuded. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 December 2008
