What is recorded here

Located towards the broader E end of the subrectangular Mount Louise Lake (dims c. 400m E-W; c. 150-250m N-S). There are three islands at the E end of the lake; only the central one appears to be artificial, although it may have a natural core. It is overgrown and oval (dims 20m N-S; 16m E-W; H 1.5m), with part of a kerb of large stones (dims 1m x 1.2m) visible at N. There is ash in the core and two piles were noted in the water off the S shore. (Smyth 1954, 4) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 30 August 2017
