What is recorded here
This site, known locally as Garraí na dTuamaí, was levelled c. 5 years ago and the debris used to fill in the little glen that ran N-S directly to E of it (local information). The present remains consist of a roughly circular area, 13m E-W x 17m N-S, raised very slightly above the external ground level, particularly on the downslope side. The perimeter also slopes very slightly down towards the centre of the site and from a distance the grass cover around the perimeter is different in colour from that in the interior and that of the surrounding field. Though the remains resemble an almost levelled ringfort, the site was described locally as a low stony mound c. 1m high, and its classification remains uncertain.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1567. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
