Gordon Castle rose from a windy bog in the 1470s into a vast Neoclassical mansion where Jane, Duchess of Gordon, hosted the political and cultural life of the Highlands. Although wartime rot claimed much of the house in 1954, the medieval tower and east wing still stand beside one of Britain’s largest walled gardens. The surviving stone suggests a place where royal ambition, Catholic loyalty, and Jacobite danger once swirled together before retreat into private memory.
