Balvenie Castle is one of Scotland’s oldest stone castles, built by the ‘Black’ Comyns in the late 13th century and later held by the ‘Black’ Douglases and Stewarts. Its great curtain wall still stands above the courtyard, while ruined domestic buildings mark the Douglas part and the Atholl Lodging shows the later Stewart residence. The castle changed hands through marriage, forfeiture and royal favour, yet each family left stone behind.

Balvenie Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Balvendie family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is important as a medieval stronghold associated with the history of the Mearns region in Aberdeenshire.
