Raglan Castle rose in Monmouthshire as a luxurious fortified mansion for the Herberts and Somersets, featuring a great hexagonal keep that rivals any castle in England or Wales. Parliamentarian forces took the Royalist stronghold in 1646 and deliberately broke its walls, ending its military life before the Somersets abandoned the ruin rather than restore it. The castle now stands as a romantic ruin where local people once took stone for their own buildings, leaving behind a shape that still suggests the grandeur those families imagined.
