Ecclesiastical enclosure in Monaincha

Situated on raised area in bog which was formerly Lough Cre and 450m W of Monaincha Abbey. Roughly circular enclosure (diam. c.104m) which has been completely levelled in SE quad., was formerly enclosed by a bank which has now been completely reduced to scarp (H 0.6m). The island is illustrated on an eighteenth century map (Ledwich c.1790) showing a rectangular building orientated roughly E-W. This was known traditionally as the 'woman's church' and had been destroyed by end of eighteenth century (Gleeson D.F. 1947, 23).
