Rossmore Monument

Rossmore Monument stands in Monaghan as a freestanding marble and sandstone fountain erected in 1876 for Henry Westenra, who died young in a hunting accident at Windsor Castle. Its eight columns, carved shields and domed spire turn a private tragedy into a bright public showpiece, forcing passersby to wonder whether the boy still watches the town through the water basin. The structure preserves his name in stone while giving the Diamond a handsome centre where memory and spectacle meet.
