Mine in Dysert

Mine

What is recorded here

Iron mines at Ardmore were originally established by Sir Walter Raleigh, but they were later purchased by Sir Richard Boyle. In 1636 Boyle leased them out for fifty pounds a year. They remain unlocated, although Westropp (1903, 378) says that there are traces of them on Ardmore Head. (Power 1978a, 31-2) Power, T. (1978a) Richard Boyle’s ironworks in Co. Waterford. Part 2. Decies, No. 7, 30-36. Westropp, T. J. (1903) Notes on the antiquities of Ardmore. JRSAI, 33, 353-80.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
