On the Down Survey (1655-6) map two watermills are depicted at the river now called the Nenagh River. These are also described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as in 'Ballycomane' there stand 'two mills (vizt) a water corne mill and a fulling mill decaying' under the ownership in 1640 of 'Sir Morish Hurly Knocklongy in ye County of Lymick Knight Irish Papist' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 300). Both watermills (14:68/14:69) are unlocated within the townland.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
