Maiden Castle in Midlothian, Scotland is an earthwork whose human makers and dates have not survived to be named. The hill may have watched herds, hidden people or marked a boundary, but the facts stop short of claiming one purpose. A castle in the local name may be a later invention, yet the earth still casts a shadow and the hill still stands where people once lived under open skies.
